It’s often said that people underestimate how able we are or how helpful we can be. Sadly, too many inmates and ex-offenders feel that life has probably passed them by.
Can they be constructive or helpful anymore?
Sometimes, it is a case of not being in the place that the Lord wants you. I truly believe that the provision of God is both a physical location as much as a Spiritual one. Take a look at Abraham who was called by the Lord to sacrifice his son on Mount Moriah. He had wealth, he had a life to look forward to, he had no need to concern himself about anything but the Lord wanted to reveal a key truth to him that he was still not aware of.
That key principle is known by us today as proof that when He believes that we are able He has to take us out of ourselves and our present location or circumstances to show us. Genesis 22 v 14 is what was revealed to Abraham that day - Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the Lord will provide”).
To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
Jehovah Jireh was revealed to Abraham to prove that with the Lord anyone can do anything at anytime, to those who believe. The Lord had provided for Abraham many. many times and He will for us.
First Missions Trip to Romania
In the 1990’s I visited Romania many times and I recall the first time that we arrived there, we were surrounded by 200 children and 100, or so, adults. It was a Friday evening and it was a cold November evening. One of the team said that we should do something for them even though they couldn’t understand our languages. I felt pretty useless and it was easy to forget the 2 day journey we had or the many clothes, provision, appliances, food that we had brought with us.
Yes, I was a pastor of 10 years but it was as though I had forgotten that we are more than able and that the Lord directed us to impact the lives of His people. It was clear to us how much in need the people were. The message of the Lord at the feeding of the 5,000 jumped out at me -
Luke 9 v 10 - 17 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he slipped quietly away with them toward the town of Bethsaida. But the crowds found out where he was going, and they followed him. He welcomed them and taught them about the Kingdom of God, and he healed those who were sick. Late in the afternoon the twelve disciples came to him and said, “Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms, so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.” But Jesus said, “You feed them.” “But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Or are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?” For there were about 5,000 men there.
I felt like the disciples - out of my depth. I prayed and the Lord gave me an answer. Someone had given us several boxes of packets of Mint Chocolate drink, about 5000 of them. Give them a drink. By now there were more than double the people there. What are these English people doing here? One problem, the village had no water and we had to ask the Council leader to put the water back on. Yes, it would cost $100US - he wanted a bribe, so we gave him $25US and the water went back on with the agreement to keep it on after we left. Agreed.
Why did we start this?
It was crazy. The bad news is that the friend we had visited was the only person with gas for cooking. No way were we going to walk up 6 flights of stairs with water from the tap on the ground floor to heat up the water on the 5th floor to bring it down again!!! we built a fire and heated the water. News travels fast and out of 2,500 in the village we attracted at least 1000. Everyone had a drink - even the council leader’s family - and we used over 2500 of the drinks and then gave the rest away so they could drink later. Every time we visited we heard about that night and the drinks we gave to the people.
Why did we do it?
We were there to help to change the lives of the people who we met. Little did we know that we would be renewing their water supply, little we know that we would be starting a church of 200 in 1 year, little did we know that from there we were asked to visit an orphanage in Budai where we changed 300 soiled, useless beds for 300 virtual unused ones - but that is another story….
Jesus said that anyone who offers a cup of water in His name in Matthew 10 v 42 - And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.
If we can, we should someone said.
We never know that we can help someone unless you start. If the Lord has called us and freed us from the power of sin and death and transformed us from darkness into light, how can we ever say that we are the same. We are changed forever by Almighty God, we are never the same. Amen? He calls us to step forward and support.
That night in Romania, we had no idea what would happen next but all those of us who were there on that night know, we know that the hearts and minds of the people were changed that night. If you have never been able or even tried to impact the heart of someone in need, then you will never know how powerful we are when the Lord is with us.
Now, you who has been changed look for a life which you can change with the direction of the Lord and His Holy Spirit.
This ministry needs you, the Lord needs you, many people close to you need you.
What have you got to lose?
Chat to you again soon, blessings in His name …
